SinceWorldWarⅡchemicalengineeringhasdeveloprapidly.Asnewdisciplineshaveprovenuseful,theyhavebeenaddedtothecurriculum.Chemicalengineeringthermodynamicsbecamegenerallyformulatedandtaughtbyabout1945.By1950,coursesinappliedchemicalkineticsandchemicalreactordesignappeared.Processcontrolappearedasanundergraduatecourseinabout1955,anddigitalcomputerusebegantodevelopabout1960.
Theideathatthevariousunitoperationsdependedoncommonmechanismsofheat,mass,andmomentumtransferdevelopedabout1960.Consequently,coursesintransportphenomenaassumedanimportantpositionasanunderlying,unifyingbasisforchemicalengineeringeducation.Newgeneraldisciplinesthathaveemergedinthelasttwodecadesincludeenvironmentalandsafetyengineering,biotechnology,andelectronicsmanufacturingprocessing.Therehasbeenanenormousamountofdevelopmentinallfields,muchofitarisingoutofmorepowerfulcomputingandappliedmathematicscapabilities.
