The government is divided into three branches, the legislative, the executive and the judicial, each has part of the powers but not all the power. And each branch of government can check, or block, the actions of the other branches. The three branches are thus in balance. This called “checks and balances”.

2.The Puritans----The Puritans were wealthy, well-educated gentlemen. They wanted to purify theChurch of England and threatened with religious persecution, the Puritans leaders saw the Newworld as the a refuge provided by God for those He meant to save.

3.The Bill of Rights----In 1789, James Madison introduced in the House of Representatives a seriesof amendments which later were drafted into twelve proposed amendments and sent to the statesfor ratification. Ten of them were ratified in 1791 and the first ten amendments to the constitutionwere called the Bills of Rights because they were to insure individual liberties.

4.The Emancipation Proclamation----After the Civil war began, Lincoln issued the EmancipationProclamation to win more support at home and abroad. It granted freedom to all slaves in areas stillcontrolled by the Confederacy.
